Battery Material Engineer

Ascend Elements is revolutionizing the production of lithium-ion battery materials by establishing a clean and sustainable supply chain using recycled feedstock. Its patented Hydro-to-Cathode™ technology directly synthesizes new cathode materials from spent lithium-ion cells more efficiently than traditional methods, resulting in reduced cost, improved performance, and lowered GHG emissions. The results are lower cost, better performance batteries with fewer discarded in landfill, a cleaner manufacturing process, and a truly sustainable closed-loop circular battery economy. Ascend Elements is taking the lithium-ion battery industry to a higher level.


The Battery Materials Engineer of the Company reports to the Manager of CAM Product Development. In such a position, the Employee shall work on the Company’s core lithium-ion battery upcycling technology, specifically the scale up and synthesis of active cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries. We are looking for a detail orientated hands-on engineer who has experience working in a lab with battery materials.


Job Responsibilities:




  • Perform and design laboratory experiments and manufacturing tasks related to the production of NMC cathode powder on recycled materials

  • Conduct sintering and doping trials on new materials

  • Conduct root causes analysis and troubleshooting on cathode scale up runs

  • Work with the cell and materials testing team to evaluate materials physical and electrochemical properties

  • Keep detailed logs of experiments such as amounts, temperature, etc.

  • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and processes

  • Assist in planning and improving production processes

  • Meet all physical requirement of the positions: lifting (<50lbs)/walking/standing for extended periods of time

  • Work with the process development team for potential process changes or trouble shooting

  • Report test progress to management

  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications and experience:



  • BS/MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or similar

  • Deep knowledge and strong hand-on experience in inorganic powder material synthesis

  • 1-2 years of hands-on experience in lab setting synthesizing cathode materials

  • Computer Proficiency (MS Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)

  • Willingness to comply with safety and quality regulations, including wearing protective gear when necessary

  • On-Site in Novi, MI
