Environmental Manager

Job Overview:


The Environmental Manager provides support in maintaining the facilities environmental, industrial, health and safety programs with ownership of the environmental compliance and permitting areas. Responsibilities include the Environmental aspect of material procurement, Permit compliance and updates, outfall inspections and sampling, and managing the hazardous waste program.


Essential Job Responsibilities:



  • Review, maintain and improve management systems Environmental regulatory areas.

  • Responsibility to apply and maintain the permitting required to operate the site: Title V, NPDES, WWTP Discharge, RCRA.

  • Produce and submit all environmental reports to Federal, state and local agencies.

  • Facilitate departmental EHS coordination teams around site objectives and targets.

  • Review and coordinate site compliance management with regulatory standards, insurance requirements and local EHS policies and procedures.

  • Work with site HR to establish and maintain EHS awareness, training, and communication according to site risk and impact assessment.

  • Provide and monitor Environmental training modules for staff including creating and uploading new content to the CBT program. Provide in-person training for operators, maint and other staff.

  • Manage the site EHS self-evaluation and audit program.

  • Review risk assessment and environmental impacts and assist departments in establishing improvement plans.

  • Coordinate on site Emergency Response Plans and Procedures; keep updated and ensure appropriate exercises/drills are conducted. Participate on the site Emergency Response Team and act as an emergency response coordinator.

  • Capable of wearing task specific personal protective equipment which may include dust mask, air purifying respirator (i.e., half and/or full faced), safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, and ear protection.

  • Capable of meeting OSHA standards for manual lifting guidelines: < 50lbs

  • While performing the duties of this job it is required to stand, walk, and use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands or arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch when necessary for job activity.

  • Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods.

  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures.



Required:



  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, Engineering, or related field.

  • 5 – 10 years’ experience in environmental compliance.

Health & Safety Coordinator

Job Overview:


The Health and Safety Coordinator provides support in maintaining the facilities Occupational Safety as well as the Process Safety programs. Focus will be on developing and improving the industrial health and safety programs (chemical safety, ergonomics, illness, and injury prevention), and ownership of the computerized EHS tracking/control of work software. Maintains safety equipment inventory, performs periodic safety inspections, and monitors hazardous waste removal.


Essential Job Responsibilities:



  • Review, maintain and improve management systems in line with Health and Safety best practices.

  • Assist and lead root cause investigations for near misses and incidents.

  • Implement the VelocityEHS software package and become the superuser. Includes set up, master data, record keeping, and training of employees.

  • Ensure team members have access to and use appropriate safety and environmental supplies and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Facilitate departmental EHS coordination teams around site objectives and targets.

  • Participate and/or lead the employee safety committee.

  • Review and coordinate site compliance management with regulatory standards, insurance requirements and local EHS policies and procedures.

  • Work with site HR to establish and maintain EHS awareness, training, and communication according to site risk and impact assessment.

  • Provide and monitor EHS training modules for staff including update CBT content.

  • Participate with the site EHS self-evaluation and audit program.

  • Identify, implement, maintain, and document all operational control programs as per local requirements on Occupational Safety and Health, Worker Safety, Loss Prevention, Environmental Sustainability, and Emergency Preparedness and Response Programs.



Required:



  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, Engineering, or safety.

  • High level of computer literacy.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in health and safety.

  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment.

  • Experience in chemical manufacturing, PSM facility preferred.

We are currently adding an Environmental, Heath, and Safety (EHS) Coordinator to our team! This role will be responsible for providing full time EHS support to our Westborough R&D and Operations teams in compliance with applicable policy and regulatory requirements. The individual in this position will support the development and coordination of training programs to establish and promote the maintenance of a safe, accident free, and healthy workplace.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:



  • Assist all teams’ managers/supervisors with accident response.

  • Assist EHS manager with root cause analysis and investigations.

  • Ensure team members have access to and use appropriate safety and environmental supplies and equipment, including personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Ensure that contractor personnel working on the property are in compliance with company EHS policies and safety requirements.

  • Maintain facility specific EHS procedures for safe work practices and equipment operation.

  • Assist EHS Manager with oversee, perform, and assist with other internal and external audits or inspections.

  • Attend shift safety meetings and participate in presentations.

  • Assist EHS Engineer with daily Hazardous and Non-Hazardous waste inspections and inventory.

  • Assist in managing environmental and safety documents/permits on site.


Education and other requirements:



  • BS degree in the Sciences and/or a degree in an EHS related field

  • Preferred: 3-5 years of facilities safety including Hazard Communication, SDS compliance, chemical management

  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Must be able to wear a respirator and other appropriate PPE equipment.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Have some knowledge of safety and environmental regulations.

  • Preferred: RCRA, DOT, HAZWOPER (24-hour minimum), First Aid/CPR/AED.

Director of Project Management – On Site, Westborough MA

Ascend Elements is a technology company commercializing the patented low-cost process for producing high quality cathode active materials from spent lithium-ion batteries. Founded with technology initially developed at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and with facilities in Massachusetts, Michigan and Georgia, we have built strong relationships throughout the electric vehicle supply chain. We are expanding out project and program management team to execute our plans for rapid growth in 2024 and beyond including our first cathode materials production facility in Kentucky.


The Director of the Program Management Office (PMO) reports to the CFO/COO. The Dir of the PMO is responsible for planning and overseeing major corporate projects that include R&D project teams with the vehicle OEMs, lithium-ion battery manufacturers, and battery active material producers. In addition, the role supports global strategy and business development activities.


Responsibilities:



  • Design and implement a corporate stage-gate process for the corporate PMO.

  • Oversee projects deliverables of direct reports to ensure outcomes consistent with expectations.

  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, project charters with scopes and objectives to track progress and oversee all institutionalization other critical project management tools.

  • Push for critical focus on budget, scope, schedule, and critical paths within the PMO and Company.

  • Prepare and maintain reporting tools to communicate project performance (e.g., weekly scorecard)

  • Perform risk assessments and management to minimize project threats and optimize project opportunities.

  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties for the execution of joint-development projects.

  • Oversee PMO group of 5+ people with projects over $1bn.

  • PMO tools experience – Project Charters, Schedule Budgets

  • Define and update project RASIC charts.

  • Cross-functional focus on accomplishing project goals on time within budget and scope.

  • Seamless handoffs with focus on the critical path through proactive project plan monitoring, risk management, and cross-functional management of project issues with timely escalation to leadership as required.

  • Use strong facilitation skills to lead regular project team meetings and apply consistent best practice for meeting agendas, actions, minutes, and other meeting documentation.

  • Lead options planning, generate recommendations, alternatives, and tradeoffs to strengthen decision-making and optimize the project strategy.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal and third parties/vendors/clients.

  • Align team activities through tracking of meeting minutes, action items, etc.

  • Ensure resource availability and allocation across all functions required.

  • Monitor and track project progress.

  • Manage change requests and negotiate new schedules and budget impact.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.



Qualifications and experience:



  • BA/BS or higher degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical, Mechanical, or applicable Engineering field

  • Minimum of 10 (Ten) years program management experience in an automotive or chemicals industry.

  • Experience with APQP is required.

  • 10 years proven working experience in project management; PMP certification preferred.

  • 10 years’ experience building and maintaining project plans, budget and resource forecasts, and project management documentation (key assumptions, risks, etc.).

  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and ability multitask and run multiple projects at the same time.

  • Proved meeting leadership and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent communication skills – written, verbal, and presentation skills required.

  • Computer proficiency, including spreadsheets and presentations; experience with Microsoft Project is highly desirable.

EHS Manager

Ascend Elements is looking forward to adding a new EHS Manager to our excellent Operations team. This position will be the lead and manage the EHS needs at our flagship APEX 1 facility. This position will have the chance to shape and lead a 1st-class EHS team in a rapidly growing company.


Duties / Responsibilities:



  • Establish, optimize, and monitor environmental, health, and safety systems across the Ascend Elements APEX 1 Complex in Hopkinsville, KY.

  • Lead team of EHS professionals, technicians, and Security Department.

  • Establish, train, support, and lead EHS department. Develop and implement audit and inspection programs to ensure proper safety protocols are in place and being followed.

  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for Environmental, Health and Safety Compliance.

  • Manage the implementation, training, updating of the Life Saving Rules program.

  • Establish and support local safety committee.

  • Coordinating with EHS leads at other facilities to ensure consistency between sites.

  • Monitors compliance with safety procedures.

  • Drafts inspection reports to document inspection findings and leads corrective action efforts.

  • Lead permitting efforts or assist third party consults when necessary.

  • Ability to travel to other Ascend Elements Sites


Required Skills / Abilities:



  • Bachelor’s degree and 10+ years of EHS experience.

  • Experience implementing EHS systems

  • Previous experience in managing a team preferred. Strong leadership skills needed.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Thorough knowledge of EHS and OSHA laws and regulations.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

  • Ability to speak and write English
